Expert discussions with Dr. Aparna Bhat
What is sleep apnea, and how is it treated?
This episode is about obstructive sleep apnea: the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, so breathing stops and starts many times a night. It is common and often missed. It can show up as snoring and gasping, but also as insomnia, night-time urination, low mood or daytime sleepiness. Depending on your circumstances, a home or in-lab sleep study can help diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment ranges from positional therapy for selected patients and weight management to a fitted mouthpiece or CPAP.
