Gerald M. Reaven (1928–2018) was Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He coined the term 'Syndrome X' — now known as metabolic syndrome — in a landmark 1988 Banting Lecture, proposing that insulin resistance is the common pathophysiological basis for central obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.
