Health Area: Physical Activity
How you move matters for far more than fitness. Different kinds of activity work on your heart, muscles, metabolism and brain in different ways, and the evidence behind each is not equally strong.
Why it matters
Most people do too little exercise, not too much, and the largest gains come from the first steps out of inactivity. Advice often promises one perfect programme, zone or step count. Our own topics point the other way: walking, cardio and strength each add something the others do not, and doing something you can keep up matters more than finding the perfect type.
Key insights from this synthesis
- Cardio and strength are not rivals. They train different things, the heart and blood vessels on one side and muscle and strength on the other, and staying independent with age needs both.
- The scale is a poor judge of whether exercise is working. Weight usually changes only a little, while deep belly fat and fitness can improve even when it does not.
- Some of the biggest brain claims are also the least certain. Mood has the clearest evidence, alongside treatment; trials have not shown that exercise prevents dementia or sharpens memory in healthy adults.
- Feeling worse after exercise has several causes, and one of them reverses the usual advice. With post-exertional malaise in ME/CFS, pushing through can make you worse.
